What is steroid acne?Steroid acne refers to acne which is caused due to the use of steroids. This is frequently seen in people who take moderate to high doses of oral steroids. Steroid acne is characterized by small itchy bumps on the skin. Some bumps may become filled with pus. Sometimes this kind of acne is associated with lesions and redness. The actual pathological process of steroid acne is not known as yet. As a matter of fact, some scientists believe that steroids do not cause acne break outs. The prevalence of steroid acne is attributed mainly to corticosteroids, which has an adverse reaction on the body. Genetics could play a role in the body’s response to corticosteroids. If a person in a family suffers from steroid acne, other members in the family will be more likely to develop acne in response to steroids. Apart from taking steroid medications, steroid acne is also caused, at times, by high levels of testosterone in the body as a result of stress or puberty. Contrary to traditional acne which happens due to hormonal imbalances, steroid acne is caused by external factors, and therefore results in worse symptoms, such as itching and stinging sensations. The best cure for this is to stop taking steroids. Your doctor will be able to analyze the cause and extent of your steroid acne and suggest alternative treatments. |
