What are the acne risk factors?

There are several risk factors for acne. The main one is hormonal changes which are associated with teenage, pregnancy and the onset of menstruation. Hormonal imbalances seem to be the main culprit triggering acne. A family history of acne also makes one more prone to developing the condition. Certain kinds of cosmetics and toiletries can clog pores and trigger the production of excess sebum. This in turn can stimulate bacterial growth at the clogs pores and cause inflammation and rashes. Harsh soaps and chemicals can wash away oils from the skin, causing the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, thereby causing acne. Therefore, it is essential to wash your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser. Do not overdo the cleaning by washing you face very frequently and using harsh soaps and scrubs. Direct exposure to sunlight can worsen acne.

This is because acne infected skin is more sensitive to sunlight and more prone to sunburns. Stress is another factor which can stimulate the sebaceous glands and cause excess sebum production. Certain antibiotics and medications like corticosteroids, androgens, oral contraceptives and phenobarbital make one more prone to developing acne. If you have a problem with acne, discuss with your doctor before using such medications.
