Treating acne with topical antibiotics

When topical antibiotics are used, Propionibacterium acnes are killed in order to curb acne problems. They will help in reducing the small infections from entering into the skin pores. Their major function is to slow down the production of bacteria that increases acne. Some of these commonly prescribed antibiotics are:

Clindamycin: it is the most widely used antibiotic by the acne patients. It is available as gel or lotion and is mostly recommended to apply twice in a day.

Erythromycin: this topical antibiotic is second most widely used for acne. Even pregnant women can make use of it safely without any problems. They are also available in the form of solution or lotion or gel.

Tetracycline: this topical antibiotic has several side effects. Hence not used by many patients to treat acne and is available in the form of ointment and gel.

Metronidazole: it is mostly used by the people that have been affected by acne due to rosacea. They may cause slight irritation when applied on the affected part of the skin.
