Is microdermabrasion good for acne?

Yes, microdermabrasion is good for acne in certain cases. Microdermabrasion is cosmetic procedure generally carried out by a dermatologist. The procedure is often carried out at various spas. Microdermabrasion is a simple and noninvasive procedure that revitalizes the skin, diminishes the wrinkles and fine lines and reduces the appearance of age pots and stretch marks. In this technique, the dermatologist or a technician using a hand held device blows a crystallized substance on the person’s skin. The crystal polishes and abrades the skin gently. Using a vacuum pump the crystals and the dead cells are removed from the skin. With this the acne scars and the blackheads are stripped away resulting in a clearer and acne free skin.

The procedure removes fine layer of skin thereby the pores are unclogged giving a clearer and smoother skin. For treating light to mild category of acne one treatment proves to be sufficient. However for the severe ones more than once the treatment has to be done. The few side effects of the method include temporary redness, blotchiness, and peeling. Rare cases resulted in the discoloration of the skin in certain areas. A survey on 25 persons subjected to microdermabrasion showed that the method was very much effective on 72% of them whereas only 28% showed fair or poor results.
