Can Over-the-counter topical treatments be used to treat Acne?

Yes, there are several over the counter products that can help to treat acne, if the acne is mild to moderate. They work by either killing the bacteria that causes the inflammation of the clogged hair follicles, or by speeding up the renewal process of skin cells, or by doing both.

The bacteria which causes the inflammation which causes acne is known as Propionibacterium acnes. Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective acne treatments because it kills Propionibacterium acnes as well as removing excess oils and dead skin which block the pores of the hair follicles.

Salicylic acid is another acne treatment which slows down the accumulation of dead cells inside the hair follicles and breaks down whiteheads and blackheads. In this way they prevent the clogging of hair follicles which leads to acne.

Sulfur and resorcinol work in a similar way to salicylic acid. They remove excess oils and dead skin, which clogs the pores. However, they tend to cause peeling of the skin, which can occur a few days after use.

Alcohol and acetone are found in facewashes and helps to clean off the oils as well as dirt that settle on the skin.
