Can Blue Light Therapy be used to Treat Acne?

Acne can be controlled with the use of right treatment. In spite of creams and antibiotics, chronic breakouts can be tough to treat. When blue light therapy or diode laser therapy is combined with traditional treatments, it can give effective result.

An oily substance called sebum is released by sebaceous gland which is attached with each hair follicle. Sebum usually goes up through the hair and accumulates at the surface of the skin. As more sebum is accumulated, it solidifies as a soft plug, promoting more sebum and skin cells to accumulate. Sometimes infection can takes place due to bacteria.

The treatments of acne can be done by reducing sebum production, fasten up the growth of new cells and removal of dead hair cells.

Laser and light based therapies work by reaching below and skin and destroying the sebaceous glands, without harming the skin. Other laser therapies work by improving the skin structure, and removing scars, for people who have both active acne and acne scars.

There are several types of light therapies used for treatment today. These are:

• Blue light therapy
• Pulsed light and heat energy therapy
• Diode laser treatment

The long term risk of laser treatments is still unknown, and it may be covered by insurance company due to its high expense.
