Is benzoyl peroxide good for acne?

Yes, benzoyl peroxide is good for treating acne. It is probably the most widely anti bacterial agent for treating acne. It may not be of much use in severe or cystic acne cases but is of great help for treating light acne and in preventing future breakouts. Benzoyl peroxides works by killing the bacteria that are responsible for blackheads and whiteheads and inflamed pimples. It is very much useful in clearing clogged pores. It has been clinically proved that benzoyl peroxide works the best when used with salicylic acid. This is because salicylic acid penetrates the clogged pores maximum and takes benzoyl peroxide deeper into the skin.

It is also very much useful in dead skin cells and sebum which accumulate and combine with bacteria and block pores. Although benzoyl peroxide helps in treating acne it may also cause irritation to the skin. To avoid irritation of skin benzoyl peroxide with lower concentration can be used. Benzoyl peroxide concentrated up to 2.5% is recommended for medical purpose. Even at low concentration it works effectively when used in combination with salicylic acid. Acne medication that contains benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are available in gels, ointments, tropical solution, and creams in the market.
