Acne and vitamin deficiency

The main vitamins, the deficiency of which cause acne, are A, B, C, E, Chromium and Zinc. Vitamin A can help combat acne to a great extent. It reduces sebum production and helps skin repair and strengthen skin tissues. Riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid are the major B vitamins essential for healthy skin. B-complex vitamins also help reduce the effects of stress on the body. Stress is a major contributing factor to acne. Vitamin C helps the body combat bacterial infection and inflammation. Vitamin E enhances tissue repair. Chromium helps prevent infection while zinc helps in healing tissues and prevent scarring. While vitamins are not a miracle cure for acne, if these are used in combination with other acne treatment, they can help reduce acne.

Some vitamins also have antibacterial effects that help the skin fight acne even before it starts up. A point to keep in mind is that excess intake of vitamins can be toxic and can lead to many dangerous side effects. Therefore, small doses of vitamins, taken consistently, will do the trick. A diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products and meat can give the body the required doses of vitamins. You can also supplement your diet with vitamin and mineral supplements to enhance skin health.
