Acne and hormonal imbalance

There does seem to be a link between hormonal imbalances and acne. Increased levels of androgens are responsible for acne. These androgens stimulate sebaceous glands which produce excess oil. This in turn clogs pores and promotes the growth of bacteria resulting in irritation and inflammation. Men have higher levels of testosterone than women although the hormone is present in small amounts in females too. In women, mild to moderate acne appears during pregnancy and menstruation. This is due to the hormonal changes which occur at these times. Similarly, women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome also seem to be more prone to acne. Sometimes certain medications can cause hormonal imbalances and trigger acne. Acne which shows up during teenage may be caused by hormonal imbalances.

However, adult acne is usually not associated with hormonal imbalances. Hormonal acne can be treated by oral medications which help the body rebalance its hormones. One of the most common medications used to control hormonal acne is birth control pills. However, such hormonal treatments cannot be used by pregnant women or people with certain medical conditions. Some dietary supplements also promise to balance out hormones which are responsible for acne. You can take medications or supplements after consulting your dermatologist.
