Acne and fish oil

Fish oil is rich in Omega 3, a fatty acid which helps lessen the inflammation caused due to acne and helps the body reduce the production of sebum. Excess production of sebum causes the pores in the skin to get blocked up. This in turn triggers bacterial infection and inflammation resulting in acne. The Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil increases the levels of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins (a hormone like substance present in all cells in our body), thereby curbing inflammation. DHA and EPA present in fish oil help reduce sebum production. Fish oil supplements are available in the form of capsules or pills and normally 800 to 1000 milligrams of fish oil supplements are recommended.

Apart from Omega 3, fish oil is also rich in vitamins A and D, and these are very effective in flushing out toxins that cause acne, from the body. A point to keep in mind is that some fish oil supplements contain mercury, which is toxic and can cause further complications. Therefore, only reputed brands should be considered for supplements. A natural source of fish oil is, of course, any oily fish. However, limit this to just one serving twice a week as this will give you sufficient amounts of fatty acids needed by your body to fight acne.
