Acne and Caffeine

Limited amount of caffeine does not turn up in developing acne but excessive caffeine is a major factor contributing in development of acne. Caffeine is addictive and is a beverage that helps in providing energy after regular interval of time. Caffeine mainly affects the sebaceous glands and hair follicles of the body. Caffeine is responsible for the overproduction of sebum which clogs the hair follicles and results in the formation of plaque. This plaque prevents flowing of sebum thereby locking the bacteria inside hair follicles resulting in development of acne. People suffering from caffeine caused acne may or may not experience symptoms such as shortness in breathing, drowsiness, infection of tongue and inner portion of gums and cheeks.

Avoid consumption of food containing caffeine such as soda, chocolate pudding, tea, cereals, chocolate, ice tea, coffee as they stimulate sebaceous glands to produce large amount of sebum thereby resulting in development of acne. Large doses of caffeine can result in side effects such as irritability, anxiety, constipation problems and even mood swings. Caffeine is responsible for aggravating the stress hormones thereby stimulating the growth of acne. Caffeine in soft and cold drinks contains processed sugar that can worsen the condition of acne.
